Treatment of Warts
Warts and molluscum contagiosum are not dangerous and typically require several treatments over several months. In most cases they will resolve on their own in 1 year. They do not require treatment. As a result, many insurance companies are instituting additional procedural fees. The required fee (deductibles, co-insurances, and copays) is charged for each additional follow up appointment. Due to this Dr. Rencic recommends trying home treatments for 2 months prior to making an appointment to have them treated. Please see the information below for recommended home treatments to try before calling the office to schedule an appointment.
Chemical Destruction Of Warts/Molluscum Contagiosum
Medicated band-aids containing 40% salicylic acid are an effective treatment and are available in most pharmacies. You can also try similar therapies such as Compound W and wart sticks. These should be applied at night and only to the wart itself as it can irritate normal skin. After a few days of using the medication the wart will start to turn gray, beginning to destroy the wart. After a shower or bath, scrape the wart with the point of a metal nail file every second to third day. This also helps the medication absorb better. Do not use anything else as warts are contagious and have the tendency to spread. Continue this treatment for 2 months. If there is no improvement contact our office to schedule an appointment.
