Salicyclic Acid Peel
A salicylic acid peel is suitable for almost all skin types. It is a superficial peel. It is extremely safe. The acid is inactivated by the skin itself and does not penetrate past the epidermis (the top layer of skin). It is ideal for patients with acne since the salicylic acid is oil soluble, it can penetrate deep into the pores to affect the inflammation deep in the follicle. It also exfoliates to unclog the pores. It results in smoother skin and a fairly quick improvement in acne. Its results can last up to 1 month. The salicylic acid peel can also be helpful for patients with rosacea. These people can often times not tolerate harsh topical medications and can see a great improvement with the peels. Lastly, anyone who would like their skin to be smoother without the downtime or risk of a deeper peel, can benefit greatly from a salicylic acid peel.
Typically we recommend a series of peels usually three to six done at one month intervals for the best results. Peels may be done farther apart in time to maintain results. Recovery time from salicylic acid peels is quick. Immediately afterwards, your face will look frosty white and red. The redness usually subsides within 1-2 hours and the frostiness (peeling skin) looks much better with moisturizer. It is usually best to avoid makeup until the next day.
